Jo Ann Alexander

JoAnn Hopkins Alexander was born October 12, 1944 in Bastrop, Texas and was the fourth child born to Lee Benjamin and Ruby Ruth Lee Hopkins. At an early age, she established herself as one of the middle children and let us all know her rightful place in the family.

After celebrating Christmas with her beloved family, God called her home on December 27, 2017.

JoAnn grew up in Bastrop, attended and graduated from Emile High School. At Emile she was a majorette in the high school band and wore the uniform with great beauty. She did not care very much for the home economics classes but she excelled in the administrative clerical classes and upon graduation, JoAnn went to work for the State of Texas Office of the Attorney General.  She and her co-workers were instrumental in the transformation of that state agency to the computer era. She worked through the administrations of four attorney generals before she retired.

 When JoAnn moved to Austin, she embraced her career as a single professional and she was one of the original fashionistas.  During this time in her life she met I. G. Alexander and they had a whirlwind courtship before getting married. Their children, Ruby Maudrea and Deric Allen were the center of their joy.

 JoAnn and her siblings were raised and taught the love of Jesus in their childhood and she showed her love for God in her love for her children, her mother and family.

 She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Mary Carolyn White; brother, Robert Hopkins and her beloved nephew, Bubba (Elijah Jackson, II).

 Joann leaves to always cherish her life her daughter, Ruby; son, Deric; sister Rev. Bernie Jackson of Bastrop; brother, Marion Lee Hopkins (Margie) of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren: Keaton, De’Deric, Makayla, Tymarion, De’Erica, KayShawn and Kamilah; two great grandchildren: Kyhleigh and Kyan and many nieces, nephews, family and friends who will all remember her journey with great affection.
