Obituary: Deacon
Arthur Gene Jackson Sr.
Deacon Arthur Gene Jackson Sr. (Sonny) was born to Alex
Jackson & Rosemary Jones-Jackson on August 27th, 1944 in
Rosanky, Texas. He was called home on Tuesday June 22nd, 2021 at
3:00am surrounded by his family and loves ones.
Arthur attended school at Salem in Peach Creek, Texas.
Arthur was employed as a construction masonry worker and
foreman with Maufrias Brother’s Construction for over 25 years and with Austin
Traffic Signal up until his diagnosis of colon cancer in January of 1998. He
possessed an impeccable work ethic and took much pride in his masonry
skills. His handiwork as a cement
finisher for Maufrias Brother’s Construction can still be seen on many of the
sidewalks in downtown Austin on Congress Avenue as well as his work on the
Austin 360 Bridge which is also known as the Pennybacker Bridge.
Arthur confessed his love for God at an early age and was
brought up in St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church. He dedicated his life to
faithfully serving the Lord. He held many positions in the church as a Sunday
School Teacher, Choir Member and
Treasurer but the one that he most enjoyed was serving as a Deacon. Arthur
served on the Deacon Board and as Head Deacon at various congregations to
include St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church~Peach Creek,Tx, Del Valle
Missionary Baptist Church~Del Valle,Tx, True Vine Church of God in
Christ~Manor,Tx, Inspirational Pentecostal Church~Bastrop, Tx and Solid Rock
Church~Manor,Tx until his health started to decline. He loved the Lord with all heart and his
faith and belief in the Word of God never wavered. He held onto his faith until the end.
Arthur enjoyed making fruit preserves and jelly. He was an
amazing cook and baked the best biscuits. He also loved fishing and watching
football. One of his favorite teams was former NFL team Houston Oilers and
Washington. His least favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys and he enjoyed
teasing Cowboy fans after they lost by calling and asking what was the final
score of the game.
Arthur was married for 35 years to his first wife the late
Minister Bobbie Jean Sterling-Jackson, until her death in February 2005.
Together they raised five Children-Zachary, Gregory, Sean, Arthur Jr &
Darla. And also took on a major role in helping to raise a Niece- Shannon and
four of their Granddaughters Maya, Sunni, Kayla(Katy) and Shyla who often took
turns in competing with each other claiming to be PawPaw’s favorite grandchild,
he loved them all equally.
Arthur was later joined in matrimony to Bertha Baker in
March of 2010. His extended family grew to include Ms. Baker’s four children-
Ricky, Toni, Patricia, Tommie and nine grandchildren including his little
“Candy Buddies” twins Aiden and Taylor whom he adored.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 11 years Bertha
Baker. Four Sons- Zachary Sterling, Gregory Sterling (Ola), Arthur Jackson Jr.
and a nephew Sean Harris (China) who was raised as a Son, all from Austin, Tx
and one Daughter- Darla Jackson Haynes (Michael) of Victoria, Tx. Eight
Sisters-Stellamae Jackson of Pflugerville,Tx, Rosemary Clemons (Willie), Linda
Jackson, Arlene Bradford (Alfred Sr.), Darlene Wright (Homer) of Austin, Tx,
Dora Limuel, Debra Jackson of Manor, Tx and Ardie Mayberry (Rev. Ervin Mayberry
Sr.) of Columbus, Tx.
Two Uncles- Earl Jones and Clint Jones of Austin, Tx.
Twelve Grandchildren- Maya, Sunni, Kayla, Shyla, Amari,
Khari, Latrissa (Tracie), Trenicia, Natasha, Bobbie Jean, Katrina and Anna
Marie. Twenty-one Great Grandchildren- Lex, Brenton, Felicity, Margaret,
Dariuhs, Trace, D’ohn, Tailyr, Allistar, Kenny, Toni, Diamond, Kiana, Kishayla,
Kisean, Demontre, Briana, Caden, Chance, Rickeisha and Micah. Thirty-six Nieces
and Nephews- Reginald, Marcia,Suchandra, Willie Jr,James, Raymond Jr.,
Charlie,Niari, Allen, Allie, Keith, Erica, Laquisha, Micheal, Antwan, Kelvin,
Stanlee, Dana Jr., Taquisha, Ervin Jr., LaRonda, Kelvin, Floyd, Alex, Jermaine,
Jennifer, Jaheim, Aleria, Daniel, Darlicia, Alfred Jr. Arlcia, Alexander, Ryan,
Shannon and Reginald Christopher.
Proceeding Arthur in death were his Mother and Father, his
first wife Minister Bobbie Jean Sterling- Jackson, Two Sisters- Sarah Deloach
and Emma Clemons, Four Brothers- Felix Jackson, Charlie Jackson, Dana Jackson
Sr. and Willie Jackson Sr., One Granddaughter- Latonya Bowdy and One Great
Grandson David Thompson.
