Florence Davis, also known as Flo, was born November 27, 1941 in Washington County, to the late Leroy Davis, Sr. and Willie Mae Love Davis.
Florence was the eighth child of thirteen children. Florence gave her life to Christ as a young lady and became a member of Soul Chapel A.M.E. Church. The family moved to Dickerson, TX in 1957. There she became a member of St. James A.M.E. Church. She attended Paul L. Dunbar High School, where she graduated in 1962. She went to cosmetology school in Galveston, TX, where she earned her beauticians license and worked until 1972.
Florence moved to San Diego, Ca in 1972, where she met the love of her life, Benny C. Davis, Sr., and entered a union that lasted for a loving 48 years. She continued her passion as a beautician for many years including working at the Great Hair Cut Place. Between them, she was very instrumental in the nurturing of their blended family that included five children. After several years Flo became a license Foster Parent. Flo never used the word “Foster Mom,” as she was “Mom” to each and every child she cared for. She took each child under her wings and taught and showed them what love and compassion was as if they were here biological children. Fostering children for over 25 years she received many awards and accolades for her outstanding hard work and caring heart. Flo helped each child enjoy a better life. She took them on vacations and many other outings that they may not have experienced without her love.
Flo and Benny, had many years together with lots love and pleasurable memories. Flo enjoyed many things in life, particularly those children, grandchildren, and family reunions. She also enjoyed fishing, cooking, card games ( spades & bid wiz), going shopping, and baking her special cakes for everyone’s birthday or just because they requested one. She also had a passion for collecting all sorts Barbie and baby dolls. Flo most of all loved God first, and certainly her family and friends. Flo loved to entertain and be around people where she exemplified the highest hospitality. As the children got older and Foster Parenting came to an end, she continued her nurturing love by caring and taking care of Mother Willie Porter, Benny’s mother.
Through the years of battling many illnesses she didn’t allow them to stop her. She kept her faith in God, prayed, and fought a good fight until November 23, 2020 when the Lord called her home to receive her Crown. She leaves to cherish her treasured life’s memories and legacy. Also, the love her life Benny C. Davis, Sr., their five children Anthony Brown (Florice), Bernard Davis (Angela), Yolanda Davis, Benny Davis, Jr. (Dominique), and Izzy Linton. Goddaughter Courtney G. Oliver, 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 4 sisters; Viola Logan, Rose Harris, Shirley Jefferson (Bobby) Sharon Davis; 1 brother Willie C. Davis, and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many great friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Leroy Sr. and Willie Mae Davis; 3 sisters; Leola Jones, Alfred Mae Davis, Mary Brown; 4 brothers; Leroy Davis, Jr., Benjamin Davis, Marvis Davis, and Maurice Davis, along with a host of other significant loved ones.
