Floyd Harris Sr Obituary

Floyd Edward Harris was born on October 11, 1942 in Taylor Texas to James T. Harris and Estashia Harris. Growing up in Smithville Texas, Floyd, affectionately known as “Flukie”, grew to love and have a deep passion for the game of football while attending Mary A. Brown High School. He accepted Christ at a young age at Sweet Home Primitive Baptist Church.

After graduating from Mary A Brown in 1962, Floyd then attended International Business School in Houston Texas, where he then enlisted in the United States Army. This was the start to a very proud and successful career in the military. In 1966, Floyd was deployed to fight in the Vietnam War where he was wounded and came back to the States where he continued to serve his country proudly for 26 years. During his service, he received numerous commendations highlighting his commitment and leadership.  After completing several tours overseas in Germany and South Korea, in 1989 he retired as First Sergeant Floyd E. Harris.  Beyond his years of active duty service, Floyd continued to live his life framed by the military leadership-style, discipline, commitment, and completing life’s mission as he both demonstrated and embraced during his time of service.  Those of us who knew him well were aware of his impatience for indecisiveness and nonsense by the mere shaking of his head with directive comments to immediately follow.

On February 24, 1966, two months before deployment to Vietnam, Floyd and Lola Jean Rogers were united in holy matrimony for 54 years; from this union four children were born.

Floyd was preceded in death by James T. Harris (father) Estashia Harris-Thomas (mother) Ludie Harris (sister) James T. Harris Jr. (brother) Isaiah Thomas (stepfather) Shirley Dade (sister) Willie Ed Thomas (brother) Jessie Mouton (sister).

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Lola Harris. His children, Kimberly Harris, Patsy Harris and Mildred Harris all in Austin Texas; Floyd E. Harris Jr. of Houston TX. Six grandchildren Tye-Shelle Harris of Baton Rouge LA; Kirk Teal Jr, Kameron Teal, Kara Teal, James Harris and Joshua Harris all of Austin. His brothers and sisters; Patsy Wilson (Mesquite TX), Joyce Teamer (Houston TX), Johnnie Ray Thomas (Smithville TX) Robert Thomas (Houston TX) Barton Thomas (Houston TX) and Donald Thomas (Austin TX). He is also survived by a host if nieces and nephews and cousins.
